A great discussion has erupted on the Fuze Blog related to Reno's new official district, SoDo.  This district is located between South Virginia and Holcomb Ave north to Stewart Street.  The area spawns many of Reno's most unique shops and restaurants like Maytan Music, LouLou's, M Home, Sup, and many more.

Although I think the idea of naming an official district is a start, I think it might be more beneficial to actually start to spice up that part of town.  I'd like to see more trees, bike lanes, etc.

SoDo is a blatant knock off of SoHo, NY. It sounds ridiculous. Cal Ave is original. SoDo sounds like you're a poseur like you wear Ralex watches, Gucca handbags, and Ralph Lorraine dresses. It's also technically flawed because most of Reno is "South of Downtown." It's also between Mill and the Zephyr bar, so why not call it "SoDoMiZe" Quit pretending you're Manhattan, you end up looking more like New Jersey wannabe. What next Upper West Side Sparks? TriSteBa Stead, Chelso Sun Valley?

It totally is a knock off. I'm pretty sure most people in Reno don't even know about it!

SoDo is very cool sounding. New York does not have a patent on shortened or catchy names. As a matter of fact Soho and Chelsea were in London first, but the dingbat criticizing probably doesn't realize that. New York is a city of European knockoffs to the 10th power. Have fun Reno!

Thanks for the comment! Reno probably will have quite a bit of fun with this name and district.
